I’ve been quietly working on a local D.I.Y. hardcore/punk music zine for the past little while, it’s called Circle the Wagons right now and probably for good, barring disaster.
What I need help with is finding enough relevant newish album releases of varying popularity levels and subgenres to review. I mean, I could review obvious new releases which are already popular or have been reviewed by other zines - or I could review recently released stuff that I already listen to - but the first situation would be unoriginal and lazy, and the second would result in an issue with ONLY good reviews (if I listen to it already, I obviously like it…).
So, it’d be fantastic if any of you could take the time to reblog this post, formspring me, or email me (circle.the.wagons.zine@gmail.com) with any titles of reasonably new releases or re-issues that you can think of which fall under the following categories:
- local bands who have recently released a new 7”, LP, demo tape, split, or any other form of album really, and are currently still playing together - i’m most interested in these! Particularly if you think a local band is underrated or should be getting more exposure than they are. I mean, I can’t have only good reviews, but I also shouldn’t have too many bad reviews - I want to be able to recommend albums for readers to listen to, and bad reviews do nothing for a reader unless he or she was already planning on buying the release and changed his or her mind as a result of the review.
- more popular bands (still underground and hardcore/punk/metal/otherwise related please) who have recently put out a new album that is particularly good, particularly bad, or departs noticeably from their earlier sound (doesn’t matter if this is a good thing or not).
- your band’s release! I’ll be pretty lenient about how recent release dates need to be, it’s the first issue
- fuck, anything you’d like to see reviewed or that you yourself would review if you were to submit to the first issue of a zine!
thanks guys!
